Startup Spotlight: BuuPass

BuuPass is Kenya’s largest online platform for booking bus, train, and flight tickets. It has brought ease and convenience to millions of Kenyan travellers and transformed travel in the country. They collaborated with the country’s top bus, train, and flight operators to offer users the convenience of digital booking.

BuuPass allows users to compare train, bus, and flight routes between destinations, this way, users can choose the best route and book tickets on the website. After booking, they can pay using their preferred payment method and receive SMS tickets.

Founded by Sonia Kabra in 2016, the company offers a good Transport Management Systems that improve efficiency, transparency, and revenue tracking. BuuPass currently operates in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Africa. They have partnered with major telcos and SuperApps such as M-Pesa App and Transsion Super App to reach a wide customer base on a daily basis. 

The company won USD 1 million in seed funding at the 2016 HULT Prize competition and is backed by several companies, including Founders Factory Africa, FrontEnd Ventures, Adaverse, Gullit, Five35, Renew Capital, Changecom, XA Network, Ajim Capital, Artha Ventures, Daba Finance, Google Black Founders Fund, and most recently, Tim Draper, a Silicon Valley tycoon, and other angel investors.
