This is 2025, and the economy is not smiling, so if there is one thing you should never rely on, it is having just one source of income.
There are a lot of things that can change overnight; one minute, a company is laying off staff, and the next minute, there is a delay in salaries. Aside from this, there are times where unexpected expenses pop up without planning for them.
But as a woman in tech, you should always know that you have a higher advantage – which is your skills. These skills can open doors to multiple streams of income that pay beyond your normal 9-to-5.
Practical Ways to Increase Your Hustle and Build Multiple Streams Of Income
Here are some practical ways to make money on the side while working full-time in tech:
- Freelancing: Your tech skills will always be in demand, and there are a lot of companies looking for freelancers. Whether you are a writer, designer, software developer, data analyst, or cybersecurity engineer, you can become a freelancer and work on platforms like Upwork or Fiverr. You can also apply for freelancing jobs online.
There are many women in tech who have built full-time careers just from freelancing. You can start with small projects, build your portfolio and increase your rates as you gain more experience. Learn to also put yourself out there and pitch your ideas to companies you think might be interested in what you have to offer.
- Tech Blogging & Content Creation: If you love and enjoy writing, you can start a blog where you explain tech in simple terms. You can also start a YouTube channel or TikTok where you can share ideas and talk about coding, tech careers, AI, cybersecurity, or any area you love. You can also leverage your recent tech skills and write or talk about them to others.
For instance, if you are a UI/UX designer, you can take a UX writing job or create content on how to design, apps to use, and shortcuts to design certain elements. With time, you can start earning through sponsored posts, Ad revenue (YouTube, Google, AdSense), or affiliate marketing.
While this may take time, it will definitely pay off in the long run. Just be consistent, something as little as one post per week can grow your audience over time.
- Online Courses and Coaching: There are a lot of aspiring women in tech who do not know how or where to start from. You can use your knowledge and experience to create courses or offer coaching. You can sell these courses on Selar, Teachable or Udemy and make money from it. You can start by offering a free webinar or Twitter space to attract your first set of students or audience.
- Remote Part-Time Jobs: Aside from freelancing, there are many companies that will offer you a flexible remote role in the tech industry. You can work as a Part-time UX/UI designer, data analyst, contract-based software developer, or tech consultant who helps businesses set up websites, apps, or security systems. Try to network on Linkedin or Twitter, let people know you are open to opportunities, and apply for remote jobs.
- Tech Investments: Once you have started making extra money, don’t just spend it; invest it. You can buy shares in tech start-ups, research and invest in crypto or blockchain projects, or start your small tech business or side project. To do this, set aside some money each month for your investment. It does not matter if it is small, just keep it. All these will add up to become something you can invest in.
Being a woman in tech gives you the opportunity to earn more. Why have just one source of income when you can make more money from different sources?
